About

Who is Jim?

Jim grew up in a family business, then went to school for math and software. It's a rare mix: he understands how a business actually works, and he can build the technology behind it.

Early on, he joined Tommy Mello at A1 Garage Door. Tommy saw before almost anyone that technology could scale a home service business, and he bet on it. Jim built the technology Tommy had envisioned: scorecards, recruiting tools, marketing, capacity management. A1 grew fast, into one of the largest home service companies in the country. He's been building at the intersection of growth and technology ever since.

Jim and Tommy went on to co-found Home Service Freedom, a network of hundreds of home service owners, and the Freedom Event, the premier event in the space. It's where owners come to see what's actually working and build their next stage of growth.

The work

Clarity you can act on.

No hype, no theory. Which tools are worth it, where technology pays off, what to fix first, and what to ignore. The few moves that move the business, not more to read.

The shift

Average businesses are going extinct.

Jim speaks on the four forces that are rewriting the rules of the service business.

01
The cost of intelligence went to zero.

AI Intelligence and Software tools are cheap and available. What used to be an edge is now the baseline. It's not just having the tools, but how you use them that counts.

02
We're in a Trust Recession.

Consumers are more skeptical than ever. They're actively researching, and considering options. Even referrals get evaluated online. Trust and proof closes the sale now.

03
Marketing got disrupted.

Consumers have shifted to AI search. What drove leads in the past has quietly stopped working. The platforms have raised prices sending the cost per lead through the roof.

04
The labor math flipped.

For a generation, people were pushed toward the white-collar desk jobs. Now those jobs are the first to be gutted by AI and automation. Headcount is no longer the answer.

HSF Member Workshop

Hollywood FL · Aug 1-3, 2026

An exclusive event for Home Service Freedom Members who want to leave sharper than they came. I'm kicking it off with a day on where AI actually is right now and what it means for your shop, no hype, just what's real and what to do about it. From there it's hands-on training where it counts: a frontline session, an apprentice-to-tech track for building your own talent, and an optional sales training for the crews that want it. And in between all of it, tons of room to network with owners playing the same game you are. Come for the training, stay for the people. Both pay off.

Freedom 2026

Mandalay Bay | Las Vegas, NV · Oct 26-28, 2026

Once a year, home service owners stop running their businesses long enough to work on them. That's Freedom, our flagship event in Las Vegas, and last year it drew around 1,500 of them into one room. Past stages have featured some of the biggest names in business, and this year I'll be sharing the stage with Robert Herjavec. Two days of the real stuff: how the best operators are growing, hiring, and building businesses that run without them, plus the kind of hallway conversations you can't get anywhere else. If you own a service business and you want to see where it's all heading before your competitors do, this is the room to be in.
