The newsletter for operators

Beyond average.

or why average is going extinct.

The middle of every market is disappearing. This is the newsletter for operators who refuse to go with it.

Something changed under you, and most owners feel it before they can name it.

The cost of intelligence dropped to zero. Trust collapsed. The way customers find you broke. The labor equation flipped. Four forces, all at once, and they’re all squeezing the same place. The middle.

The squeeze

Average used to be safe. Not anymore.

A decent business, run decently, made a decent living for decades. The well-capitalized players are pulling away at the top. Commodity pricing is eating away at the bottom. The average operator is getting squeezed out of existence.

That’s the extinction of average. The only direction that’s still safe is beyond it.

What you’ll get

What’s real, what matters, and what I’d build from your chair.

Roughly once a week, sometimes more when the tech moves fast, (and lately it moves fast), I write about what’s actually changing and what to do about it. Not the hype. Not another tool you’ll never open.

The edge is knowing what to build, and you can’t prompt your way to judgment you don’t have. That’s the part I’m here to sharpen.

Who’s writing this

An operator who builds.

For 20 years I’ve worked at the intersection of business growth and technology. I was the CMO and CTO at A1 Garage Door Service, where I built some of the technology behind its scale to an industry-leading exit. I co-founded Home Service Freedom, which now coaches hundreds of owners and trains their teams. And I still write software myself.

I’m not a guru, and I don’t have a stage act.

I build things, and I write about what I learn.
